Swing Keel Refurbishment

Disclaimer
These web pages briefly describe my keel refurbishment project, but NOT in sufficient detail as to be an instructional guide on keel restoration and/or alteration. The National Catalina 22 Association ( www.catalina22.org ) provides some material on keel maintenance and restoration that is instructional in nature.

Time to Refurbish. . . The swing keel (made of Iron) continues to rust, so I decided to remove the keel and refinish it. My plan was to bring it down to bare metal, apply a cold galzanizing compound to inhibit rust, then encapsulate it in epoxy and fiberglass. The results would be (hopefully) a better performing keel that did not continually rust. I also wanted to add weight (in the form of lead) to the bottom of the keel to make the boat a bit stiffer (see my Ballast & Heeling Page). I figured I needed to make the weight removable in case the boat was ever to be raced in class races.

The entire process will be accomplished in a number of steps outlined below. Just click on the link to see the details of each step.

- Removing the Keel

- Removing the Rust(Sanding)

- Zinc Coating

- Epoxy/FiberGlass Coating

- Adding Ballast

- Fairing

- Finishing

- Installation
